Something for everyone

Six o’clock, every other Thursday. The Thursday Tea has become a popular community event at Old Lodge Lane Baptist Church. It’s a great way to enjoy a good meal and socialise with family, friends and neighbours.

It’s not just about the menu, of course. Thursday Tea has a wider significance. As an expression of our Christian faith it’s just as important as Sunday worship. It has all the theological elements that church should have. It’s welcoming, it’s open to everyone, it’s generous in spirit and it’s free.

Our ministry is to the whole community. Everyone who comes to Thursday Tea is as much a part of our community and as dear to us as our faithful brothers and sisters who come on Sundays to worship our God.

Food for thought

We all need to eat. Food is a recurring theme throughout the Bible, and shared meals have a special significance.

The earliest Christians met in each other’s homes and made a point of eating together. They would have known that two of the greatest events in bible history, the crucifixion of Jesus and the exodus from Egypt, were immediately preceded by shared meals.

You can read the amazing accounts of those meals in Exodus chapter 12 and John’s Gospel chapters 13 to 17. As a taster, here’s a couple of other eating-related scriptures:

“Go, eat your food with gladness, and drink your wine with a joyful heart, for God has already approved what you do.”
Ecclesiastes 9:7

“Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.”
Matthew 4:4
